London, Thursday 29th February 2024 – RX has published its Net Zero Roadmap, outlining how the company will reach Net Zero no later than 2040. RX is a founding member of the Net Zero Carbon Events pledge which was launched by the events industry in November 2021 at COP26 in Glasgow.
The ambitious net zero initiative is supported by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and forms a global event industry alliance between the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry (UFI) and the Joint Meetings Industry Council (JMIC) and commits all signatories to reach net zero by 2050 and to halve greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
RELX, RX’s parent company, has made it a priority to reduce its environmental footprint and in 2021 signed up to The Climate Pledge which commits RELX and RX to reach net zero by 2040.
Commenting on the publication, Hugh Jones global CEO of RX, said: “The Net Zero Carbon Events initiative focuses on the emissions associated with the complete life cycle of events; from the energy used, to the production of stands, signage, carpet, food and associated waste, logistics and travel.
“No matter where carbon reporting boundaries are ultimately established for Scope 3 event-related emissions, all stakeholders including venue owners, organisers, exhibitors, attendees, and general service contractors have a role to play in helping to identify, track, and reduce emissions associated with events.
“While our immediate challenge is to measure these emissions, our roadmap sets out the milestones we are putting in place to ensure we reduce our emissions to net zero no later than 2040. Collaboration and measurement across our industry are fundamental in this process. Working with our partners, venues and stakeholders, it’s essential we take a united approach to reach our net zero goals, and we are already seeing great progress.”
The RX roadmap publication is a key step in the Net Zero Carbon events (NZCE) journey, which details five action areas: 1. Energy, 2. Production & Waste, 3. Food & Food Waste, 4. Freight & Logistics, and 5. Travel. Identifying short, medium and long-term milestones for each of these action areas is a key goal.
Helen Sheppard, RX Sustainability Director explained: “Establishing a set of measurable goals for our events so we can understand our progress over time is a key priority for everyone here at RX. I’m motivated by knowing that we are going to have lasting, positive change for our industry and planet. Every day I am inspired by the people I work with and the wider event industry – the engagement, the creativity, the adaptability and the innovation. Working together, I am super excited about the impact we will have.”
